Dental implantologists in the state were given a demonstration of immediate loading basal implants (ILBI) by German doctor Dr Stefan Ihde during a pre-conference workshop organised as part of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI), conducted in goa.

Ihde said the advantage of these implants is that they take support of the basal bone and thus minimizes the chances of failure of implants.

"This is helpful for controlled diabetics, smokers and patients who have little or no bone for conventional implants."

Ihde demonstrated the method by doing the procedure on a 50-year-old woman who had seven tooth implants. The material used is a titanium alloy. Anyone in the age group of 20 and above can undergo the surgery.

"The advantage is that the patient can get a full set of new teeth within 72 hours. It can be done on a single or multiple or entire 32 and can be used like normal teeth for hard chewing also," said Dr Bhavin Vasava, who had also performed the surgery.

He said the implants can be fixed based on the state of the bone. "These implants are unique in that they utilize the available bone in the best possible manner to avoid bone augmentation procedures. With conventional ones, the available bone is modified to suit the implants. With the basal implants, they are selected or adapted to suit the available bone with respect to quality and quantity," he said.
